Thomas Hulme Memorial

Information about the Thomas Hulme memorial

Thomas Ernest Hulme was an English critic and poet who, through his writings on art, literature and politics, had a notable influence upon modernism. He was an aesthetic philosopher and the ‘father of imagism’.

Hulme was born at Gratton Hall, Endon, the son of Thomas and Mary Hulme. He was educated at Newcastle-under-Lyme High School, and from 1902, St John’s College, Cambridge.

He was killed in the Great War on the 28th September 1917.

The Thomas Hulme Memorial was unveiled at Hallwater (on the A53) by Karen Bradley MP. The event was a great success where schools and local organisations took part and contributed to a memorable day.
