Government Announces Decision on Local Government Reorganisation
The Government has announced its decision on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) for Staffordshire. As part of the changes, the current two-tier system of Staffordshire County Council and the District and Borough Councils will be replaced by two new unitary councils.

The new authorities will be:
- Southern and Mid Staffordshire Unitary, comprising:
- Cannock Chase
- East Staffordshire
- Lichfield
- South Staffordshire
- Stafford
- Tamworth
- North Staffordshire Unitary, comprising:
- Newcastle-under-Lyme
- Staffordshire Moorlands
- Stoke-on-Trent
The new unitary councils are expected to assume responsibility for local government services from 1 April 2028, following elections in May 2027.
